How long does it take to charge an electric car?
Charging times for electric cars vary by model and power facilities installed. To fully charge an electric car can vary from as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours depending on the size of the battery and speed of the charging unit. For example, a typical electric car – such as the Nissan Leaf – takes just under 8 hours to fully charge from empty using a 7kw charging point. Unless charging overnight, many users will top up rather than wait for a full charge. With many 50kw rapid chargers available in public charge spots, you can add a further 100 miles range in about 35 mins charge time meaning that there is little reason to worry if you haven’t the time to fully charge at home.
How often can I charge my car?
Much like many household electrical devices, you can charge you electric car at home as often as you need to. It can be treated the same as charging a mobile phone, fully charging overnight and topping up in the day as and when required.
It is not specifically necessary to charge your car everyday – as this depends on usage – however, a lot of electric car owners in Sussex like to regularly charge overnight so that the car is full and ready to go for the following day. Alongside convenience, by charging overnight, you can also take advantage of cheaper night time electricity rates and drive your car for as little as 2p a mile.
When travelling long distances, many electric car owners like to top up using charging facilities at work or public destinations.
